  • About

Following a neurological event such as a stroke or spinal injury patients can have difficulty sitting on their own. This is usually due to weakness, reduced sensation or reduced balance post the neurological event. This prevents patients sitting in a normal standard armchair as they would be at risk of falling out.  As part of the rehabilitation process, patients would need to increase their time sitting in order to go home or to a rehabilitation centre.

A tilt in space chair provides extra support at their trunk, neck and legs to allow patients to sit safely in chairs.

The hospital has a small number of these specialist wheelchairs, however, if we can raise the funds we can significantly enhance the provision for people recovering from a major neurological event.

With your help, we would like to provide an additional four specialist rehabilitation wheelchairs for stroke and spinal injury patients.

This will make a significant positive impact for patients, beyond the normal provision. Supporting these additional chairs will help more patients spend time sitting out of a hospital bed, helping to accelerate their rehabilitation, and preventing the deconditioning which can happen when we spend a long time in a bed.

Having a variety of sizes of chairs will allow patients to be in a chair suited to their size - allowing them sit out for longer which can improve their outcomes and time spent in hospital.

A simple enhancement, which will have a big impact for people recovering from a stroke or spinal injury, beyond what would otherwise be possible.

Donations to this page are designated for the purpose of providing these additional rehabiliation chairs. Any money raised beyond this when the appeal concludes, or which cannot be used in this way will support other charitable activities for patients and staff across SASH NHS Trust.
