Fundraising for our Early Pregnancy Unit: Transforming the bereavement room

The Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) at East Surrey Hospital provides vital care for people experiencing concerns during the early stages of pregnancy, supporting those up to 16 weeks with issues such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, or excessive vomiting. This nurse-led team includes nurses, nursing associates, nursing assistants, sonographers, ward clerks, consultants, doctors, and physician associates, all dedicated to offering compassionate care during difficult times.

Sadly, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss. For many, this can be one of the most challenging experiences of their lives. Our EPU team are experts in early pregnancy complications, providing critical, empathetic care to ensure patients feel safe and supported.

We are raising funds to transform the bereavement room in the EPU, where families receive care during these heart-wrenching moments. The goal is to make the room feel less clinical and more comforting, offering a peaceful and welcoming space for grieving families.

• Brighten the space: A fresh coat of paint and a mural will help create a calming atmosphere.
• Home-like touches: Adding refreshment facilities will allow families to feel more at home during their time in the hospital.
• Soothing sounds: A speaker system will provide families with the option to play their choice of music, offering a comforting distraction from hospital sounds.

Any money remaining in the fund when the appeal concludes, or which cannot be used in the EPU will support other charitable activities for patients and staff across SASH NHS Trust.
